Hello all. I have been to this site a few times but figured it was probably about time to join up and get a little more serious about learning how to save more money on gas.

About me... well, I am mainly into Hondas, having owned a number of them including a 92 VX (that I wish I wouldn't have sold ), a d16z6 turbo '95 coupe, and now I drive a 90 Civic standard hatchback.

I built my current car for a few reasons. One, I use this car as my daily driver and commute 40 miles a day or more, so I needed something that gets good mileage. And two, I love autocrossing so I wanted something that would have enough power and suspension mods to be a fun weekend warrior.

So, I started with a 1990 Civic standard hatchback that I found for $500 with a blown head gasket and a few other problems. Then I built a d16z6 from the ground up, including all new bearings, oil pump, water pump, pistons, rings, gaskets etc.. I also converted the car from DPFI to MPFI and from OBD0 to OBD1. I also added a few select suspension parts as well.

Anyways, to make a long story short, I have been getting a solid 32-38 mpg. This is a combination of highway, stop and go, and city driving since my commute includes them all.

I would like to increase my milage even more if it's possible, and I know it is!! I'll share more about my mpg experiments later on, but for now here's a few pics of the car I built and currently daily drive.

I look forward to getting some advice and learning all I can from this site!

Goodness, so many new folks.

Anyway, nice car! Very clean, makes me like the hatchs a little bit more.

Why uberdata and not crome?

Why uberdata and not crome?

Ehh... it's just what I am used to. I ran Uberdata in my last Civic so I used it a ton.

I will probably convert over to crome one of these days if it's really going to benefit me. There are a few glitches in Uber that I don't really care for, but I'm used to them so they don't bother me. lol

Are you using the si tranny in that thing?

Are you using the si tranny in that thing?

Yup, the tranny was originally in a 91 CRX Si.

I think it works really well with the d16z6 engine. But I wish the final drive was a bit taller for highway driving. I need to learn more about transmissions so I can modify this one for better fuel economy.

This is becoming a Honda club! :D

Not that I mind, plus it does kind of prove that Hondas seem to get better FE than the majority of vehicles out there (my dad just pulled off a ~44 mpg hwy trip in his 1999 EX which is rated at 35 mpg hwy = 20.5% over EPA...he drives gently).

I just kind of like diversity.

Thanks for the positive responses! I have been reading on here all morning... seems like the more I read the more questions I have!

I am also very impressed by the MPG some of you guys are getting. I didn't think some of those numbers were possible.

D16Z6 you like that application? I was just desiding on what setup I was going to run in my civic.. Just commited to a JDM D16B 1.6 VTEC.

I think it's a great combination for this car. It has a good amount of power, was a very cheap swap to do, and was very inexpensive compared to most other swaps. It's not a rocket by any means, but that wasn't my goal either. I wanted to find a good balance of performance and FE, which this engine seems to accomplish pretty well.

Oh, and I got those stickers from http://www.shockerstickers.com/store/

cool thx for the link.. Yeah I know what you mean about looking for balance... I want both economy and a little power to.. well relative to the d15 1.5L 50WHP I have now... I would just rebuild D15 but by the time you figure the labor hours and cost of seals rings and the verious other thing you should replace while the block is open. It is just as much to do a complete swap, since it is very straight forward swap.

Are those miata rims on your car?

Welcome to the the site

They are, this is discussed in the miata rim thread I made, aren't they nice looking?

EDIT: Damn, they are good looking, do you have the center caps?

Thanks. I wasn't sure if I liked them or not when I first bought them, but they have grown on me. Plus, I know of very few Civics running these wheels. Most Civics around here have Honda/Acura OE wheels (HX, VX, meshies, twisties etc). I have only seen one other Civic with miata wheels on it. For the price/weight ratio, you really can't beat them!

I do have the center caps but I can't fit them over my lugs. I have conical gorilla lugs on there and they are longer than the OE mazda lugs. I don't really have any desire to put the center caps on there, although it would be better for FE reasons I suppose.

Here are a few more pics for you:

Oh, one question. I input some of my gas milage logs that I had on my computer. How do I get that graph to show up that shows my milage?

It should be at the bottom of your garage page, I'll check now!

EDIT: I dunno, I just tossed matt a pm about it.

I love my hondas, but having a 3 cyl metro is VERY cool in my book!

Oh def, next year if I can find a metro beater up at dartmouth I'll prolly buy it, :)

Anyway, the gaslog graphs only update once a day, so the graph should be up tomorrow.
