i'm new obviously. i drive a '92 Civic DX/Si EG. i think it's obvious as to why i joined. what are some good tips/a good read to get me on track to learning the secrets of 40mpg+?

Aero mods are one of the best and cheapest things that you can do to improve your freeway numbers and the streets(depends how fast you go)

Also replace things like fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap&rotor, spark plug wires if you haven't done that in a while.

Driving technique & not driving fast will net your biggest gains, without question. And it's free.

Look up EOC, CODFISHING, FAS (these are all the same thing), for example.

To date, in order of biggest gains first, my best results have been from:

- driving technique
- disconnecting alternator for short trips - solar/grid recharging
- taller geared tranny swap (highway results only)
- aero mods

i'm not sure what eoc, codfishing, and fas is, i couln't really find anything.

what kind of aero mods are we talking about? rear wheel covers?

(Check the glossary (http://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?t=1088&highlight=glossary) for those terms. SVOboy has done a good job linking the terms to threads that discuss them.)

All 3 of those are different acronyms for coasting the car with the engine off (getting infinite MPG). It's one of the most productive techniques for boosting your city FE. People who do this "agressively" will typically see their city mpg figures rise above what they can achieve on the highway. (EDIT: and people who live in mountainous terrain can do it at highway speeds too.)

Aero mods I've done to date:

- rear wheel skirts
- grille block
- smooth wheel covers

The first 2 things netted me a 5.7% increase in highway MPG. I didn't test the wheel covers.

Also, just about everyone here will highly recommend getting fuel economy instrumentation for immediate feedback. Useful for honing driving techniques and testing changes to the car. Check the glossary for SuperMID.

What they said on 20/20 yesterday is, "drive like there is a cup of boiling coffee on your dashboard".

Don't foget to pump up the tires too.
