I am hoping to kick frank's a$$, yeah I'm frank.
I want to swap to a b8 from my 16 valve b1.
SVO tells me i need:

dizzy (he's got one) :)
ecu (he's got it) :)
injector clips (thanks matt) :)

The swap would come with mpfi, and i would modify my own harness, hopefully. :o

I was first thinking of a simple head swap, but SVO has informed me it would be better to swap a whole engine. i.e. less gaskets to buy/worry about :)

Edit: Just realized my back might not like an entire engine swap. SVO, did you have to lift your engine ever?

SVOboy

You'll also need a throttle body, as the swap is missing that.

Anyway, I'm thinking of compiling a full list of what we need to get this crap done, so lemme type for a few minutes.

Okee, MPFI/OBD1/D15B8 Swap List:

Longblock
OBD1 Distributor
P05 ECU
IM/TB
Injector Clips
Wire
Electrical Tape
Shrink Wrap
Spare Soldering Iron Tip
Wire Loom
Fix my Valve Cover to Trade You
Water Pump
Timing Belt
Alternator Belt
OBD1 Ecu Plugs
Drain Pan for Coolant

That's all I can think of right now, water pump/timing belt is a good thing to do before the engine goes in.

To your edit, I had my back seriously hurt for about three weeks from improper lifting of that b8 engine. But we'll find a hoist somewhere, no worries.

06-28-2006, 11:17 PM
I just put water pump/timing belt/alt belt on last month, all new parts...think they're compatible? Nice list, by the way.

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:20 PM
They ought to be, We can just put the timing belt up next to the old one and see.

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:22 PM
Nice. Your back ok now? :o I am just worrying about getting it in and out of my car to put on hoist. That is when I can't imagine a way around lifting it. What do you think?

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:25 PM
Hmm, I lost my reply, but anyway, I only hurt myself not thinking, but I totally stripped the engine also.

Anyway, we can double up on picking it up.

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:29 PM
If you are still around, and willing, that would certainly be awesome. We'll see I guess, that's how I ruptured a disc though, picking up the wrong way how you did. Any idea how much the engine weighs? 200-250 lbs, maybe?

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:33 PM
duplicate post

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:34 PM
It'll be less if we take some easy crap off. The engine itself is a little more than 100, so that's cake.

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:36 PM
That's doable. ;)
I can't wait to see what we are getting in comparison to one another, so I can decide for sure. Even if I can only get another 6-7 mpg, the fact that I could then have a MID is really tempting. Instantaneous results?! Did you do much EOCing on your last 51.? tank?

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:39 PM
88% of my distance covered was with the engine on, :)

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:44 PM
Very Nice...Well, well. I was thinking we had such a large discrepancy due to mpfi/dpfi, but i didn't eoc once for my 230 mile 43.7mpg. I bet I could get 49mpg with that much eoc'ing, goes to show mpfi might not be that much better with our 16v setups. If there is barely a diff b/w mpfi/dpfi, the main diff on the hf must be the b7 then, that and the fact that the crx is rated 1mpg better than the civic in any case ;)

thisisntjared
06-28-2006, 11:46 PM
see you guys can do that. in southern jersey, the real southern jersey. you cant coast anywhere. except the bridge to the island i live on and i dont care to do that. so all the distance i cover is with the engine on.

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:47 PM
Yeah, MPFI is definately better but it's no magic bullet, :p

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:48 PM
Jared: Most of my coasting is on ramps, in my neighborhood, and engine braking to lights. Other than that traffic prevents me from doing what I want, :p

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:52 PM
I followed your lead on engine braking to lights rather than eoc'ing after my near crash (power brakes went out, as i neared car at light). If the injectors are off, then it's the same, if you need to slow down anyway. I'm glad you told me, cuz I would have kept doing it after my initial scare :o

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:55 PM
Yeah, I only eoc where I won't have to brakes, I can always bump into an engine brake and then cut power later, :p

PM that guy to get pictures of the engine so we know what's included, my email hated him when he tried to send it to me.

budomove
06-28-2006, 11:57 PM
I'm on it. You have any interest in keeping my b1, and trying to get a buck for it?

SVOboy
06-28-2006, 11:59 PM
I'll keep it, but I doubt there's a buck to be made out of it. I might use the block for something though, also, I'd prolly do a cam swap to see for a fact how the difference affect FE. But who knows!

budomove
06-29-2006, 12:04 AM
Yeah, I guess it's not a very sought after engine. Oh well, for research then, equally important.

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 12:06 AM
We'll see if matt makes any dough off his. A block in good condition is always worth something, even if you can't sell it, :p

I'm trying to part mine out right now. no luck so far. Hopefully someone will need a used d15b2 head/intake manifold/distributor.

If not It goes on craigslist.

I do admit that I'd like to make a cool table out of the engine block though. That would be pretty freaking sweet.

I do admit that I'd like to make a cool table out of the engine block though. That would be pretty freaking sweet.

Back before I lived with women, I had a few engine blocks in my apt. I would send them through the dishwasher to clean them up. But I'll tell you from experience, you sure has hell don't want to trip over those things in a half asleep / drunken stupor.

BTW, don't use that dry dishwasher detergent stuff on car parts, makes them get all white spotty, not good.

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 08:56 AM
It works good on wheels though, :p

Actually, Matt, I was palnning on making some sort of table out of the two blocks I have currently. A friend of mine is really into recycled home stuff that's actually useful so we'll get together and think about it, :p

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 10:09 AM
i forgot, obd1 ecu plugs, matttttt?

budomove
06-29-2006, 10:14 AM
You could also potentially use a block to chill champagne....a bottle in each cylinder. :D

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 10:15 AM
haha, i don't think the bore is large enough for that, mehbe beer though.

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 11:38 AM
I was just thinking that if I were smart I would have bought the thing myself, it will end up being cheaper and less worry than the head swap, :p

SVOboy
06-29-2006, 12:47 PM
PS, I don't think your cap will fit this dizzy so you'll need one of those, too, :p

This swap has new potential, as Ben has found a whole d15b8 out in Reading, and would like to use that while I would just swap heads with his b8 head. I am not sure if I am going to do the swap this time, but am resurrecting this thread nonetheless in the hopes that it will inspire me to make the right decision.

swap is $70 and includes:

D15B8 whole engine
Intake Manifold
Intake Arm (extra $5)

Ben has:
Dizzy

I would still need:

Throttle Body
P05 ecu
ecu plugs (matt has them. hi matt.:p )
IM gasket
TB gasket
head gasket

I backed out last time, after Ben set it all up, cuz it seems like a lot for the measly mpg gains it would bring as compared to a z1 swap.
But Ben has just reminded me it would be also so I could be obd1 and get a MID. We shall see.

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 10:21 PM
You asked about gasket cost. I screwed burns honda into giving me MSRP, so it'd be 30.88 for a d16y8 HG and 12.95 for an IM gasket, like 2 bucks for the TB gasket.

budomove
08-06-2006, 10:29 PM
Wow, that's not bad at all. But it adds up.... and is really as much as a vx swap?

gaskets: $45.00
head/im: $70.00
dizzy: ?
ecu: $20.00 maybe
distributer cap: $20.00
ecu plugs: ?
throttle body: $30.00 maybe
gas to get it: $10.00

all said and done, and it looks like well over $200, maybe $250.:o

I am going away on August 17 :) , and this is again looking like it would seriously tear into my funds, as I have already just scored a set of vx rims from Dan. ;)
Maybe it would be smarter to wait for a vx swap, like the one on ebay I stupidly missed by a split second at the end of the auction. :o Doh!

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 10:31 PM
Mehbe it would! Iono, we'll see. I still need to get mine done, :(

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 10:36 PM
My car looks like it was in a wreck right now. I might end up short on money too, going to the aquarium with my friend on thursday, :p Hopefully the job will pay and I'll do a strut job and get some money for that stuff. *shrug* I'll make it happen!

budomove
08-06-2006, 10:44 PM
which aquarium? at least i can give you a spare valve cover you could make a couple bucks on. i'd give you the steelies, but i'll prolly use em for winter tires, if 13" winter tires even make any sort of difference.:D they're prolly like ice skates. Not that you'd make much on steel rims anyway. :p

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 10:48 PM
You want my steelies? Haha. Screw that. I need to organize all my stuff, no one wants it anyway. What I need is a cx so that my freaking alternator will match the crank pulley. Damnit, mehbe I'll just buy the one in reading. :(, this isn't working out well at all!

budomove
08-06-2006, 10:56 PM
Or you could buy a tow truck, drive out to the midwest and pick up the $100 vx i just found on ebay. ;)

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 10:57 PM
Or I could go cut the switch and hand it to my mom myself. Anyway, I don't feel like messing with a bent frame. You gonna lower your hatchcrap ever?

budomove
08-06-2006, 11:01 PM
I would, but bouncing ain't my game.

I was hurrying back and forth as a gopher for work yesterday, and on the highway went over some patches of uneven ground. At 70mph i felt like the car might just launch up off the road it is so light, and has such a small wheelbase. I can't imagine how it'd behave in such situations if I put your pogosticks on it.

budomove
08-06-2006, 11:02 PM
good call, i wouldn't mess with a bent frame either.

SVOboy
08-06-2006, 11:05 PM
Just realized I have a cx crank I can use, just need to get it off. Will eliminate a/c but it doesn't work anyway. *shrug* Save me some dough I guess on buying the other engine though. Wish I could just go ahead and rip out the a/c.

budomove
08-06-2006, 11:17 PM
I may actually dump the car because it does NOT have a/c. I need it if i get some sort of "respectable" job in nj (as opposed to moving to ny), since i've had to drive shirtless in order not to drench my clothes. I need a/c just in case it's unbearable, since my wimpy allergies won't allow me to open the windows much. :o It would be a sorry day, but that may be the only way i'll really keep it in the long run. I'll prolly keep it anyway, who am i kidding. :D I'd like to wait, and be able to keep the car at least til honda diesels or the next gen faux insight replacement come out.

Sometimes we have to suffer for beauty.

That gaping space above the wheel on my car is def ugly.

Just put some 25" race slicks on the vx rims.

budomove
08-06-2006, 11:32 PM
If you put tires on from a monster truck, all four tires would touch..it'd be like a steamroller.

Hmm. I need to do my swap. Wish I was a better accountant, can't even find my wallet.

Ninja edit: On a related note, I'm hoping to have the car running tomorrow so I can drive to work, but we'll see how involved I get. Prolly not, since I want it done well and it doesn't need to be going until thursday. Ah, having time to work on the car is magical.

budomove
08-06-2006, 11:34 PM
I don't even have enough money to carry one. :p

i carry them loose, lose one, then carry a wallet for a month, get sick of carrying it and dump it again until i lose some other important item worthy of a wallet.

any particular type/brand of paint you used on the rims?

good luck getting car running. is that because of the crank pulley?

my car, with a sunroof, and hx rims. i want it now.

maybe the b8 is worthwhile.
mpg:

95 cx 42 46 44

95 vx 47 56 51

91 hf 49 52 50

Would the gearing difference between the hf and cx be the only reason why the cx gets 6mpg less than the hf?
the more aero crx gets 1mpg more than the 4th gen civic with same engine/gearing, but the other 5mpg? simply gearing?
i still need to take stock of my finances. :o :D

SVOboy
08-07-2006, 09:35 AM
The body style is the difference between the CX and the HF, I'm sure the gearing makes 1 mpg difference, but it's not all that much. The engines are really the same, which is what makes the cx EPA rating deceptive.
