I generally wasn't a fan of solar cars since they seemed to go so darn slow. Well, that was my missconception anyway. This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Nuna3atZandvoort1.JPG) little (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuna) puppy (http://www.nuonsolarteam.nl/nuna3/engels/home_eng.php), averaged over 60mph in 2005. I'd rock it.

Yeah , but who wants to fly to Australia to get enough sun to drive their car at 60mph.?

Neither. I'm unfortunately on the edge of the Mojave desert.

Mojave desert ! , another nice place to live :D

I live in northern europe now but Ime originally from western australia.
In the exact place that my house was I have no doubt I could be 100% grid free running off solar and wind power.
In the afternoons the winds would pick up to 30mph plus., and often it would be so windy it would blow my outdoor table setting away.
I found it on the roof broken once.

Solar and wind power are viable alternatives , but in the rite places only.

Trying to do it here (finland) would be a waste of time , no wind and no sun.
Battery storage electric cars would be quite tragic here because of the low temperatures.

I'm right next to the San Gorgornio pass, and we have a huge wind farm. It blows day and night down there. And generally up here in the afternoon. The only time we don't get sun is during a thunderstorm, and then we get wind, so it's a trade off.

Come to think of it , I dont think there is any practical free energy to be had where I am now.
And as far as thuinderstorms are concerned , I have only heard thunder 2 times in 2 years.
Its an odd place , very odd.
