I picked up a remote mount thermometer last night for $14. It will give real time temps and also let me see how additional load affects HAI temps.

I got it at wallyworld. I mounted it and sent the wife off on a 2100 mile trip. We'll see how they do. I hope they average around 44mpg.

Here's a pic of the same unit.

How well calibrated is it?

Yeah... I have been using mine (a meat therm.... with a remote) for a while... very nice because the cable is flexible enough that you can put in in the intake under or over the filter and screw it down tight.... still works great.

Calibration? Not sure, but I wasn't interested in absolute temps anyway, just the ability to distinguish wide ranges like plus 10-20 and minus 10-20 degrees.

Ha ha, you guys got it easy. I had to rip my meat thermometer apart and install my own wires :(. The accuracy seemed right on with mine when I got it though, when stuck in the radiator it would jump to 180 when the thermostat opened. (had a 180 thermostat at the time).

I haven't checked the calibration yet. I installed it for the wife to make some minor adjustments to the HAI on her trip this week. I do have another spike style thermometer installed in the airbox that allows you to crosscheck.
