:)

Someone was selling a used 17 lb thrust Minnkota like this for $30. Couldn't stop myself...

I don't fish, but there's no shortage of boats (& batteries) around here to play with this.

How 'bout a for-canoe? Forken-ewe? :D

How much do these usually cost?

Regular pedal boats with the paddle wheels seem really inefficient. If the generator had some gearing then you could adjust the pedaling speed and effort to whatever you wanted...

Anyway, I know you have other priorities. I just think it's cool that you might find an innovative use for the little boat motor.

I've got the motor and the canoe.
Now what do I do?

Maybe I should put the new bike in the canoe.

Actually I thought that this motor might run hot if not immersed in cold water. I bought one too.

yeah they are water cooled, not very efficient and have brushes that eventually wear out and carbon up the insides like crazy. I was working with eCycle a few years ago redesigning a brushless version for Johnson that never took off.

Made a "tri-brid" this weekend (wind/gas/electric)

Used? I checked a few eBay auctions and saw $30-$60 for this type of motor. Plus shipping.

Guess what I tried this weekend?

Dope! How fast can you two go together?

MetroMPG

Not really sure. I'm kind of hypermiling it.

That's pertty cool.

I'm not sure but $30 - $60 would probably be less than registeration and taxes in MA. :(

Still, It'd be nice to have on my canoe on this lake (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=lake+monomonac+,+nh&sll=42.719568,-71.985222&sspn=0.001825,0.003589&ie=UTF8&ll=42.713093,-71.992378&spn=0.058398,0.114841&t=k&z=13&om=1).

...or maybe I should put one on my Force5 as a generator and charge up the battery (yes, that's assuming I make the huge sacrifice of sailing all day) ;)

On the high setting, it goes faster than I could paddle! Doesn't quite get up and plane ;)
Maybe with 4 of 'em? :D

Would you seriously have to register an electric canoe?

I went for a long (maybe 10 km) solo canoe trip across the lake to a hiking trail today. Used the motor about half the trip.

Power storage courtesy of 2 of the junky floodies the forklift company donated. Biggest downside: weight. Those 2 batteries weigh more than the canoe!

Yes, but they are nice when they are working with a head wind.

Got this on ebay for $10, (paid twice that in shipping).

We were paddling the squareback canoe last weekend and trying to fish in a breeze, wasn't working too well.

Also, I too am looking for any excuse to say I have an electric only vehicle :) I came pretty close to doing the gomi bike. The wife would have KILLED me if I brought a motorcycle home though, money aside...

Yeah, breezy conditions made for interesting times with mine too.

What's the rating on your motor? Thrust lbs? Looks similar to mine in size.

I'm guessing 10lbs, top speed won't be much but it should run for a while even without many speeds to choose from. Might get interesting if I take the canoe on the metro then use the metro battery to run the canoe, i.e. park on a large hill and cross fingers :)

Well considering I ran mine almost exclusively on the lowest power setting (1 out of 4, where 4 = 17 lbs), I'm guessing it was delivering probably more like 5 lbs.

Unfortunately, I don't have a boat suitable to use it now. The canoe I used it on came with the cottage we rented in July.

Forgot to mention that I did a rough calculation of top speed on flat water with no wind, and it was something around 8 km/h (5 mph).

The gas motor on the 24 foot sailboat that I race on gave up the ghost on Tuesday, so I brought down the Minn Kota and the old starting batt from the ForkenSwift for last night's race.
