Looking for a decent tire pump - bicycle hand pump style. No outdoor outlets for an air compressor , so I'm looking to replace my not-so-handy hand tire pump . The one I have is at best 'ok' ( a wallyworld special )- real tough to get it locked on to the valve stem and once it's locked on(after leaking out 10 psi  ) takes around 30 pumps to reclaim the 10 + 25 pumps per 5 psi . I know I'm probably asking a bit much of it but it's what I have to work with . Besides they are light and fit in the car for those last second psi adjustments
Any recommendations for a decent, long lasting & garaunteed-to-add-air-not hiss-most-of-it-out tire pump ?
I've got a Top Peak Joe Blow pump, and while it is a terrific pump, the valve fitting infuriates me nearly every time I use it for the reason you stated. Today I bought a tire chuck for my air compressor however and it is the most simple and effective valve fitting I've ever used, with a little spring loaded clip that only takes one hand and light thumb pressure to operate and lock on. It makes me wonder why such things don't exist on hand pumps.

Harbor Freight has a white big bore long stroke hand pump that I find works very well up to 100 psi into a 10 gallon air tank gives a nice workout and it has an outside cylinder that moved up and down and gets hot at the top and a good clamp on nozzlewhich doesn't leak. It can beat the typical 12 volt powered air compressor.

T'ja! No doubt there . I'm almost going to guess a hose / chuck swap is in order .
Harbor Freight ? I never thought to look there . Thanks !

This is for inflating car tires?
I use a 5 gallon air tank, the original tire inflator hose replaced with a ~2 foot hose with a typical air tool quick-connect on the end. I fill it off my compressor, but one could just as easily fill it with a small plug-in air pump... It would take longer, that's all.
The quick connect lets me attach air tools such as an impact gun to take off a wheel's worth of lugnuts, or an inflator. For tires, I use a nice Harbor Freight inflator (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92360), the long tire chuck thing replaced with one of the spring clip chucks (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46788) that Snax mentioned.
The tank is a bit bulky to carry around in the car, so I guess that tosses it to the back of the pack, option-wise, but I thought I would throw it out there just the same.

I need to get a 5 gal. air tank. Gets old having to go to the compressor all the time....

I have a 5 and a 10 gallon and it is a lot faster inflating and quieter too with the 10 I put the female quick connect air hose fitting to accept the pressure regulator and valve chuck or longer hoses.

A tank type would be nice for sure but in a 700 sq foot apartment not including the dog ...not much room for that .
Will have to look into that spring clip chuck though and adapt it to a hand pump .
Whatever you do, don't get something that's $4 and plugs into your cigarette lighter. It might do in an emergency, but it's loud and it doesn't do the trick. Spend a bit more and get something solid.
I have no brand name suggestions, just a 'what not to do' story.

Yeah spend at least $12 on an eletric pump version then take it apart and lube it with some good synthetic to make it last longer and run better.
I have a beat up version of this one and it runs great and provides 12 volt power via a lighter plug for other things as well. I use it to charge up the 10 gallon tank to 100psi.

Well the 'clip-chuck' is the ticket ! Thanks for the suggestion .
Local hardware store had one for $4.99 as well as the 3/16 barb x1/4 npt fitting at $1.29 . So by doubling the price paid for the pump with the extra fittings...I got one that works correctly every time .

I have a nice joe-blow pump that works great for bike tires, easly gets them up to 100+ psi, but for car tires it's to small of a cylender, so look at the tube diamiter of the pump and get one that is larger around so you can get more volume of air compressed per stroke.
