Where's my throttle cable, :p Joke joke, need to not waste money if I'm gonna fix my wheel bearing...

The transmission is still leaking, rather badly I think. I need to remove the axle tomorrow and replace the axle seal.
Those seals are hard to find. You can't get them at Autozone or Pep Boys. I had to get one from Honda for around $9. Im assuming you have the VX tranny.

HF tranny, want me to send you one, matt? I've got tons!

I'd use a brand new one...not an old one. Just go to honda and shell out the $9...it will be worth it in the end.

I got mine from Honda too...
I actually replaced it when the engine was out of the car, but apparently I didn't replace it correctly.
I'll try to fix it myself, and if that doesn't work I'll shell out the money for another new one.
Oh, and SVOBoy is right. I have a HF Transmission. THe 92+ transmissions don't fit in the 88-91 hondas, at least not directly.

Speedometer doesn't work.
ARGH!
THe cable is hooked up properly, but I think I may have loosened the vehicle speed sensor last month when I was trying to remove it. I'm guessing it's not all of the way "in" now.
Hopefully I can easily tap it into place.

Considering how much I pulled and yanked on it I'd be surpised if it slipped out.

Okay... I put a new axle seal on and it didn't help... leaked a ton of oil...
upon further inspection I realized I put both of the axle seals on incorrectly, so I'm going to redo it aagain in a little while.
Also figured out that my new speedo cable is broken. I managed to fix my old one, so it will go in tonight.

Use OEM or a good quality seal(timkin is good). Also check the sealing area on the axle for nics and dings.

I have hard enough time learning from my own but thanks for the tip.
Well done so far!

I've only used OEM seals. The ones from Napa were shapped incorrectly.
That being said, the issue wasn't dings or nicks, but rather that I put the seal in incorrectly.

For my car I only get parts from the dealer, or a a place that sells dealer parts.
I don't want to be replacing the same part twice. I only go these auto stores to buy oil and dump my oil.

Maiden voyage was a total success. I think this tank is going to be around 50mpg at this current rate, which is good, but not good enough.
I think I felt the lean burn a few times kick in, but I'm unsure. I really need to hook up a multimeter to the o2 sensor to see the values. Krousdb, which wires did you hook it up to do get your reading?

For anyone working on putting seals or bearings in their car, I highly recommend purchasing a seal driver set...very inexpensive and highly effective.

Matt- This is Ted Hart. I have a question: Your pics show a 4-cyl engine ; MY Honda 600 Coupe had a 2-cyl motorcycle engine...even air-cooled! What gives? -Ted
P.S. I can help you with gas mileage (later, when the "new" wears off!LOL). Keep in touch!

This was the mount that came with the engine, I took a grinder to both sides to make it fit into the chassis mount holder, I haven't test fitted the engine since I modded the mount then Matt asked if I'd post pics. I actually have an OBD-0 mount but I can't pry the crank pulley bolt off the Z1, period.

It still probably won't fit. I tried to do the same thing on mine. I took a hacksaw to the mount and made it thinner, but it was still like 2 inches off the mark when I was putting the engine in.
Here's how i got the crank pulley bolt off:

See page one. While you havethe engine out, it wouldn't hurt to put a new timing belt and water pump on anyway. You'll thank yourself in 30,000 miles.

Matt,
I had a few questions regarding the d15z1 swap. I am basically doing th same thing, only i am also converting to manual (i have that covered thanks to DAX's DIY).
1. As far as the throttle cable is concerened. You mentioned that you used an EX cable. Did the original one not work(the one already in the car). If not why not?
2. What did you do with the exhaust system. Did all of the existing pipes work. I have everything stock. Did you use the Header and downpipe from the new D15z1 or did you use the stock header and downpipe? Hows your setup. By the way i only have 1 cat (Stock cat).
3. Did you leave the Power Steering on the engine using only 2 of the 4 bolts? Or what did you do?
4. I remembered you had trouble with the power steering because the belt patterns did not match. What if i change the power steering pumps pulley to a 92-95 civic pulley? Then i would only have to buy a new belt, rather than going through the trouble of removing the crank pulley right? Whats your insight on this subject?
5. On your fuel line, you said that the line form a hf worked. Would cutting the fuel line, like the other mentioned, have worked?
6. For the mount on the drivers side, would it be a lot better to use the stock 88 mount? in terms of fitment and stability?
7. With respect to the EGR valve, you said i would need an EGR control box? Im new to this, what exactly do i need to make the EGR work Correctly? What did you do?
For the Million Dollar Question:
What is your MPG now?
Thank you in advance. I think ive got everything, i just need to clear up some stuff.

[QUOTE=8Civic8]2. What did you do with the exhaust system. Did all of the existing pipes work. I have everything stock. Did you use the Header and downpipe from the new D15z1 or did you use the stock header and downpipe? Hows your setup. By the way i only have 1 cat (Stock cat).
I have the header and downpipe from the d15z1 attached to the b-pipe and cat from the stock car. Now I have two cats, but I'm okay with that. If it bothers either can be hollowed out, or the second pipe can be replaced with a test pipe.
3. Did you leave the Power Steering on the engine using only 2 of the 4 bolts? Or what did you do?
It's actually only using one of the four bolts. I need to remove the bracket and widen another of the holes to enable the bolt fitting.
4. I remembered you had trouble with the power steering because the belt patterns did not match. What if i change the power steering pumps pulley to a 92-95 civic pulley? Then i would only have to buy a new belt, rather than going through the trouble of removing the crank pulley right? Whats your insight on this subject?
I'm unsure if the pulleys will be swappable or not. You might want to try to just get a PS pump from a 92-95 and put it on your existing system. I"d also recommend that you DO remove the crank pulley so that you can replace the timing belt and water pump. When the engine is out is the best time to replace these parts.
5. On your fuel line, you said that the line form a hf worked. Would cutting the fuel line, like the other mentioned, have worked?
I'd recommend not cutting fuel lines. I might be able to find a fuel line from a HF if you're interested. There is one in the junkyard I frequent.
6. For the mount on the drivers side, would it be a lot better to use the stock 88 mount? in terms of fitment and stability?
Yes. You need to remove the crank pulley and the plastic cover. Then you'll unbolt the mount from the block (two giant bolts) and bolt the entire mount from the 88 onto the d15z1. It will sit a little crooked, but will work without a problem.
7. With respect to the EGR valve, you said i would need an EGR control box? Im new to this, what exactly do i need to make the EGR work Correctly? What did you do?
I bought an EGR control box from a guy on Honda-Tech for $20.
For the Million Dollar Question:
What is your MPG now?
no idea. I've been trouble shooting electrical problems for a while now, and I've been out of town for a week. I may have a few gremlins to track down before I can report concrete MPG numbers.

Thank you for your reply. You have no idea how much i appreciate it. But i think you forgot to mention if you used the stock civic throttle cable?
Hmm, I wonder if the old exhaust system will fit because i dont think my engine will include the down pipe. I also have a stock header system off a 93 del sol si, which should be the same for a stock d15 on a del sol. I guess i'll have to wait and see if either fits.

Throttle cable. Your current one will fit. It will be about 2 feet too long, but it will work. If you want a shorter throttle cable, look for one from a CRX HF, a CRX Si, or a Civic Si.
I would strongly suggest against using anything but the intended exhaust system on this engine. The exhaust header is unique to honda's gas mileage vehicles. The o2 sensor is placed in a certain place for a reason. Moving it 8 inches or so down the pipe will give your ECU false readings, which might cause ECU codes to occur, or bad gas mileage.

Matt,
Thanks for the info.
I have been looking for the EGR control box for the engine but i cant post on hondatech's market place, when i try to post a Want to buy post i get a message "You do not have permission to participate in this forum." Would you happen to know why i get that message.
Also, if anyone reading this post knows where i can get an Egr Control Box for the d15z1 (civic VX). Not the egr unit, its a control box, Matt has a picture of it on an earlier post.

Honda Tech requires you to be a member for a certain number of days before you can post in the classifieds section. I'm uncertain how many days that is, but it's just the name of the game.

Just put in an order for a new oxygen sensor from www.oxygensensor.net.
I feel kind of weight dropping $180 on a car that I'm going to sell soon, but I'm almost positive the low MPG is due to the used oxygen sensor on this car. The guy who sold it to me said it had 160k miles on it. I'm pretty certain with the new o2 sensor I can get the MPG up to 45mpg easily, which will make this car that much easier to sell.

Whats the difference between the California and the non-California VX?
I am from california and i bought an ecu thats not from california. Im guessing that theres also a difference inside of the ecu if its a california model but i have no idea what it is. Does anyone know what it is?
How would i know that the ECU is not from California or that it is?

DOn't know how to tell the difference, but I can tell you the difference in operation.
The CA model used a 4-wire o2 sensor and doesn't have lean burn at highway speeds. The non-CA model used a wideband o2 sensor (5 wires) and has lean burn.
Check www.fueleconomy.gov and notice the different EPA estimates for the two models.

If the CA model does not use a wideband and only uses a narrowband, then you can tell the difference in ECU's by opening them up and looking to see if it has two processor chips. If there are two processor chips, then you have the lean burn ECU that works with the wideband (5-wire).

How do the processors look. I opened my ecu up my ecu and it looks just like the following P28, its identical same chips and everything (Except that it doesnt have that programmed chip in the lower right hand corner, im guessing thats what you burn and solder on the ecu)
http://pgmfi.org/resources/FAQ/scans/P28ericks.jpg
(NOTE: I Know nothing about ecu's other than ive got one that is a #####-P07-L02)
Ive read somewhere, i think rywire.com, that the L means california? Doest the fact that i have one that looks just like a p28 and has an L02 mean that i have a 4 wire o2 sensor? ( i need to buy an o2 sensor and i wanna make sure)
Edit:

I think the best bet is probably to email Ryan at rywire. He can most certainly tell you if your ECU is a CA model or not based on your ECU code.

After wasting all day on this, I am finishing up and I notice my cylinder cover bolt keeps spinning.
Yep. You guessed it. Busted.]
Can anyone recommend what to do about this hole? I would use epoxy or something (as I have the piece that broke off as well) but I'm afraid it will fall off again and screw with my rocker arms.
I had a similar issue. I had a valve vover bolt break off in my head (cylinder head of course:) ) I just used silicone and the broke bolt as a plug and I didn't get any valve cover leaks. Good work. I just spent 45 minutes reading this thread......
8Civic8, check your ECU label HERE (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/LabelDecode). That is all the info to tell what ECU you have and emissions type and everything.
I'm almost done swaping my VX into my 88 hatch. I even bought the vx wheels. I'll start a thread when I'm done.

Same here, but in my '89 CRX HF, and I've only got steelies for now. I just hope you didn't take as long as I did to complete the swap (It will be 2 years in mid-Oct., but that counts the whole tear-down and rebuild, and technically the swap has been all done since April, she fires alright, purrs and screams proper). I dunno about a thread, I've got to much crap going on to even update my gas log, much less pictures and details. Looking forward to yours though...maybe one day I'll get mine done...Mak

You can probably sell your entire z6 swap (with tranny, ECU, etc.) for around $800. You can get a good z1 swap (ECU, tranny, etc.) for less than that.
My engine was $550 shipped to my door. ECU was $30. You can probably get the tranny for next to nothing (people just throw these things away). You can get a EGR control box for around $20 on honda-tech.
I've actually seen entire Z1 swaps go for $200 on honda-tech before.
FWIW, I bought my d16z6 complete swap (came w/ a DC ceramic header, too) from a private owner, 98k for $500. From what I've seen, that's the going rate for a z6 swap--maybe $600.
