Where can one buy a Vacuum "Fuel Economy" Guage ??

There are lots of places, but from what I've heard there is not much point to getting one. What kinda car do you drive? Is it obd2 (96+)? I was going to post something about this anyway but I'll say it here.

I am going to get a boost/vacuum gauge as if I had a turbocharger on my car. For what reason? Because even without a turbo or anything my NA car can fall into vacuum, which works against the pistons and puts more resistance on the engines motion. So, when you change your speed around to make the gauge hit 0 boost and 0 vacuum, you will be getting the least resistance from vacuum pressures on the pistons. This is, I believe, the same thing as the old vacuum mpg gauge, but the vacuum mpg gauge tends to be awfully inaccurate.

I wouldn't spend more than 30 on one. I bid on the first one hoping I could get it for ten bucks, that's all the money I have.

JC Whitney has them. I found one on there once that had a "MPG" display on it, but I can't find it now.

They will only really work on carburated engines acurately, which don't get the best MPG to begin with. Fuel injection has a fuel return line that will make all of the numbers on these vacuum gauges not really mean much.

We're currently working on a MPG gauge for older cars that run fuel injection, which will be awesome if/when it's done.

If you are really interested in an onboard computer and you have a carburatred car, I'd try to find a Zemco computer on Ebay. You can get it for about $100, and it has MPG, trip odometers, etc. it was a product of the gas shortage in the 70s. They are a really cool machine, one which I think would be very cool to reproduce if at all possible.

That crazy zemco crap. That fuelsaver from england is back on ebay, and I really want it, I just don't have the money, but who knows if it'll ever show up again.

ARGH. You mean the one that stops your car when you idle? I want that too, but I also don't want to sit there and have my car start and stop all of the time.

I'm still concerned about the electrical load required to start the car over and over again. My understanding is that you have to drive a decent distance in order to get the charge back from the initial start.

The solution to this might be getting a small solar charger to trickle charge your battery during the day. They sell them for like $40-60 in various auto parts stores.

There was a Zemco driving computer on ebay that ended today. I bid on it but got sniped in the last two seconds (but hey, I was trying to snipe, too). It ended up going for $61 plus $8 shipping. It came with a fuel flow sensor, magnetic speed sensor, and the in car computer that displayed distance traveled, speed, instantaneous mpg and net mpg. Maybe a few more variables. I really wish I had more money to bid on this. It would be a real time saver for testing mpg, as well as increased accuracy.

Fuel flow sensors are really expensive so making one myself is out of the question.

What I really want you to make, though, is a zemco fuel saver. It's on ebay now too. It shuts to car off at idle and then when you whack the gas starts it back up. The VW Lupo also sports this feature.

My understanding is that the zemco driving computers won't work as well for Fuel injected cars due to the fuel return line. Is this true?

If we can get some of these fuel flow sensor, can't you hook up the fuel flow sensors (both the main one and the return one) and splice into the car's odomoter/speedometer (VSS) to calculate MPG?

If you could do that, talk about big money. There are no other obd1/obd0 MPG gauges out there for EFI.

I hadn't researched these much. I was just bidding on a whim. It did say in the auction that special adaptors are required for fuel injected engines.

One fuel flow sensor I saw was $150. There's got to be something cheaper out there.

It would be very easy to calculated mpg once you know precisely how much fuel you're burning. You could use the speedo signal or use your own sensor like the Zemco does.

An instantaneous mpg gauge would be a big advantage in our world. Maybe I'll work on that after the tunable AFR meter.

I've been trying to find someone to make one of these for months now. I don't have the know-how for something like this, and I would want nothing more than one of these. YOu can use the scangauge for the obd2 cars, but there is nothing for EFI obd0 and obd1 cars.

There are enough of us out there that this would probably sell rather well, IMHO.

I just bought a standard vaccuum guage made by Autogauge and had it fitted in the side pillar. Helps to keep an eye on my gas pedal.

How much/where'd you get it? I would pick one up for cheap enough just to have it when I do a highway 100mi run to figure out mileage so I could see if it reads the same as the numbers I'd get from the tank.

That is the style of vacuum gauge gauge that seems to be disputed in accuracy, especially in our newer not carbbed models, but it would at least be a resonable estimate, I think. Easy enough to find online. For a 96+ car you can just use a scangauge and just get goooood accuracy.

all its showing you is if your TB is open or not. not very necesarry.

You make a very good point. For this it would be MUCH easier to hook up a line of LEDs to the TPS Sensor and indicate voltage.

Okay, maybe not much easier, but definately much more cool :P

On the subject of lines of LEDs, I want to hook up a binary clock in my car. Just so you know.

i was just saying that it's pointless unless you want a cool gauge in your car.
you can for sure tell how far your gas pedal is down.
