LRR Tires (I know been asked 1000 times) - Gas Savers

After reading everything I could find here on Gassavers and what I could find else where I am still stumped on the LRR tires for my VX.

The only ones that I can find close to my size (165/70/13) are these:

The Kumhos in a 155/80SR13

Set of 4 for about $160 to my door. Anyone have any reasons why I should not do that? For some reason I am just afraid to "pull the trigger" on this.

It would be alot easyer if LRR tires were advertised as LRR and you didnt have to have some magic powers to figure it out.

I went back to the site to get more info, but it requires a subsription of $6/mo. or $29/year for the LRR ratings.

They did say this:

"Consumer Reports is the only organization that regularly publishes a rolling resistance score as part of its ratings of important tire-performance criteria. We note rolling resistance for all the tires we test except winter tires, where traction and grip are of paramount importance."

The latest test of tires was 11/06 -- so for piece of mind you may do a one-month trial and look at additional options.

I just put a set of kumho a/s 795s on my hx rims, and these are great. They grip the road much better than the re92, and roll just as easily it seems. they come in 165/80/13 and 175/70/13 too from tirerack.

Check out this survey of the best a/s tires, I assure you these tires will satisfy.

The Sumitomo HTR T4 is available in size 165/70R13 and its maximum psi is 51 (which should give it an advantage over other LRR tires whose psi max is 44):

I have 155/80 R13 snow tires on my vx right now and they are great, my other tires are firestone f570 165/70 R13, and are pretty sweet, altho not as low rolling resistance as I was hoping for, they grip amazingly well, and role better then any 175/70 R13 tires I've ever had (175/70 is just to wide, it's absurd) one of the sites posted in the last few days offered 145/80 R13 tires, I'm tempted to get some next time I need new tires.

Tirerack had them at my door today. (the 155/80/13's) I will have them mounted tomorrow. The back set will go on tomorrow too but the fronts will have to wait until the snow tires and rims come off in April.

FWIW, I've had the Toyo 800 Ultras on since Nov.06. Really good wet/dry grip, very smooth, but a little noisy at times. No change in FE 4me.

Best data I found was to find the latest Consumer Reports issue re. Tires. They do rate them for rr, using their typical 5-point scale with the red and black dots. Unfortunately tire models change pretty quickly sometimes so what's available may not match what did well in Cons. Repts.

The other bit I decided on was to get tires rated at least 44 psi. If I can find/afford tires rated at 50-something I'd prefer that.

I had a dream that someone on gassavers was using powerwheels type hard plastic tires as LRRs. They were big and red.

About 15-20K miles ago, I replaced the existing treads with Michelin Energy MXV4 tires. Sidewall max is listed at 44, but I run 50-52 psi in all 4. So far (in ice, snow, rain, dry, etc.) no abnormal wear is present. Missouri roads are pretty lumpy, so a fair share of potholes and stress cracks are the norm. No lumps or evidence of belt breakage, and in the center of the tread -- nothing abnormal (as expected by the over-inflation guru's).

Not sure if they make 50+ psi all-season tires, but these work just fine...

I'm using the Kumho 795 175/70/13 on my Swift, running 40 psi. They grip well, are quiet, and after 20,000 miles seem to be wearing well. Unfortunately I can't give a gas mileage comparison since I put them on shortly after I bought the car. I do get 50 to 51 mpg on the highway which is higher than the 44 mpg rating for the car. A big thumbs up for Kumho tires.
