Personally I think the new EPA figures are crap.

The above (Googled) image is what she looks like in her dreams. I rescued her from a trip to certain death in the junkyard on 6/29/01 with 162,000 miles. Originally it was going to donate a cylinder head to another Tempo but it ran too good to dismantle. 2.3L MEFI 4 cyl., 5 speed. Weighs 2487 without spare and jack, and deducting for the estimated amount of gas in the tank at the time of weighing.

Accrued 7108 miles in a recent 12 month period. At current ave. FE of 41 (9/4/07) annual use is 173 gallons. At old EPA of 33 it would have been 215 g; a 42 (Number 42!!!!!) gallon savings, or 3.5 gallons/mo, or at today's price of $3.07, $129/year savings (a somewhat disingenuous measure tho'). Conversely, were I to double current FE to 82 mpg, annual use would be 87 g and annual gas expense would drop from $657 to $328 ($27/mo).

TOTAL annual cost: $789 ($66/mo; $2.17/day) @ 11.1 cents/mile as per "cents/mile" thread.
Now it has new struts, "cut" lowered springs (about a 1.5-2" drop), new windshield, aluminum 14" wheels, and a moonroof. The smashed out "grille hole" where the front fascia was has a grille block made from the hole I cut out of the roof for the moonroof, and the big round sealed beams I put in there. 192,000 miles and going strong. Had been running 35 psi front/33 psi rear until 9/12/06- now am trying 45/42. Don't like the ride now though- if it doesn't increase FE it's going back down.

11/21/06 coroplast rear wheel skirts, pass. mirror delete, antenna delete, wipers delete, coroplast cowl panel, coroplast mirror filler panel.

4/6/07 193,487 miles: finally bought new cap and rotor to cure misfire for good. Turns out, all it needed was a new coil and coil wire- grrrrrrr. FE better rocket back up is all I can say!

7/30/07 Best FE ever. Had to work at it though.

9/03/07 removed passenger seat- for load carrying reasons, not weight reduction.

9/05/07 Re-installed passenger mirror, passenger wiper, antenna, cowl panel, and removed skirts. Now let's see what happens.

2/16/08 Installed "Pulse Plugs".

Total investment $500!!!
