Description
Smart Turbo Diesel that was only sold in Canada or Germany. Rated by Smart at 86.5 combined mpg, 88kg/liter CO2, 30kw (40 hp), and 76 lb/ft tq @ 2000 rpm (not EPA listed). Limited edition with leather seats and glass roof. I live in the UK and found the car on German Ebay. A weekend ferry ride and a few hours of driving in Holland and Germany (I like the way the German's drive, not the speed but everyone follows the rules, always) and back to the UK. The Brit's have an inspection system called a MOT and some registration hoops to jump through but the car should be on the road by Christmas O8 and I'll start reporting the numbers on it and a few blogs on effectiveness of proposed mods.
Modifications
Engine remapped to new 2006 and newer model map, 33kw (45 hp) and 81 lb/ft tq on 10% less fuel. Wider 195 tires all around on alloy wheels. Nerf bar reg plate (license plate, I'm an American living in England) bar on the front. I think I saw some Bilstein shocks in the back but haven't gone through it yet.
Planned Modifications
Remapping of the semi automatic transmission and adding paddle shifters. I have a spare set of factory size 135 front and 175 rear wheels with LRR tires I would like to experiment with but don't think the diesel will care one way or another, we'll see. In the maybe list would be different size turbo inlet pipe and an aftermarket exhaust but more research is needed first. I might play with things like swapping the wipers around and making them stop on the sides (up and down) instead of the bottom and other aero improvements.
