| Description |
This is my toy and fun car. None of the modifications have been made with fuel economy as a goal. Though the newer more highway-friendly drivetrain has likely improved fuel economy. I can't accurately track MPG because all the changes has made the speedo/odometer about 18% off and I have yet to get the correct gear to fix it.
Amusingly this was Mercury's "compact" car for 1962. She's over 16 feet long, and has a nearly 30 cubic foot trunk. |
| Modifications |
Replaced stock 144ci 6-cyl, 2-spd merc-o-matic transmission and 1:3.50 rear gears with 47K drivetrain from a 1971 Ford Maverick.
New drivetrain has a 200ci 6-cyl, 3-spd C4 automatic and 1:2.76 8" rearend.
Upgraded with pertronix electronic ignition, front disc brakes, and 14" front rims (rears too, once I find more they are rare -'65 only Mustang 4-lugs).
Seatbelts & outside mirrors have been added (both dealer options!) |

Finish the bodywork & repaint, get seats & doorpanels refreshed.
I would love to convert her to run on alcohol or propane. I love the idea of a classic "economy" car as an alternative fuel vehicle. |
