Among the interesting enhancements is an "Eco-gauge" that lies before the driver, just under the speedometer.

What sounds like a tool to measure global warming actually monitors your fuel use.

If you're really pushing, the needle will be planted into yellow, meaning you're using the maximum engine performance and the maximum amount of fuel. Green means you're conserving gas.

Recalibrated on each fill-up, the gauge helps you modify your driving and is not unlike the instantaneous fuel consumption display fitted to Toyota's Prius.

Intelligent mode is for fuel misers. It's able to cut consumption by around 10 per cent, Subaru claims, by limiting engine and torque output by some 10 per cent.

All three modes change the throttle mapping; for automatic transmission cars, the shift mapping is altered as well.

If you used both the Eco-gauge and the Intelligent mode to their full effect, expect a savings of 10 to 15 per cent over a Legacy driver without those features.
