5% increase in FE

Well, I drove with the windows up, coasted to lights and turned the engine off at lights. Drove max speed of 55 mph. This increased my second fill up to 51.08 mpg, up from 49.61 on my first fill up. Any suggestions for further improvements? Not sure how much more "technique" will help. I drive about 75 miles a day with some in town and mostly highway driving, so I need to maintain a steady speed most of the time.

Nice work! I forget: are you averse to coasting with the engine off (as opposed to just shutting down when stopped)? That would be the next thing I'd work into the routine.

Do a search in the experiments forum - I compared FE coasting with the engine on vs off over a fixed course. It was a significant difference.

Also, if you haven't read the "hows and whys of hypermiling" at CleanMPG, you should.

I don't mind coasting with the engine off. How did you wire in your kill switch so I don't have to keep using the ignition switch? I'll try to work more coasting into my route. I'll check out the website also. Thanks for the pointers.

My mistake, the second fill up was 52.08 mpg not 51.

It's wired into the positive coil pick-up wire that comes out of the distributor.

Others have suggested splicing into the fuel-injector wire (throttle body injection = just one wire) might be a better approach.

When you're coasting and get down to a relatively slow road speed, what gear do you leave your car in to "bump" start it? I noticed at slower speeds it wants to really slow the car down trying to start in first or second. Should I start in third or fourth then push in the clutch and then downshift into the appropriate gear?

That's it exactly. Do a search on bump starting. The topic has come up a few times, and a number of people have written some good, detailed descriptions of their technique.

It may take some practice to figure out what gears to use for different road speeds, as well as how deeply/quickly to engage and then disengage the clutch to get a smooth, reliable start.
