IIRC I did a calc from the English to Amercian MPG and I think there's an 18% difference (don't quote me on that -- just a foggy memory) -- so that would put the Mini at around 50.1.

When I was in Europe, I saw all these MPG numbers and was astounded -- later, it turns out that it was false American hopes -- had to subtract a few.

The Toyota D-4D engines are *very* good. I drove a 150BHP Avensis D4-D over 150 miles, at average 56mph, with air-con on for about 30 mins, and with a cold start through town at the beginning, and got 91MPG UK (=75.8MPG US). Most people driving the car other than me tend to get 45MPG (UK)

The only problem is, being modern engines, they can't run veg oil (which is practically zero emissions).

They can, but it's risky. Most modern diesels have very high pressure fuel injection systems, so in order to use the oil, it has to be much warmer than it has to be with older idi systems. Then there's the potential for the combusted products to gum up the rings, which isn't as much of a problem in an idi since combustion occurs in a prechamber. All in all it's safer/easier/probably cheaper to turn oil into biodiesel, at least for tdis.

New engine contract, even the Mk1 Petrol (Chrysler) motors for the US are being replaced by PSA units for the Mk2.
