Efficiency Rating

I was thinking that the EPA has changed the way they come up with the EPA numbers several times in the past and will be changing them again in 2008. Can anyone come up with a way to measure the car efficiency so that they are all on equal footing and not even have the EPA number in there? Something to be able to compare different cars with different size engines and see if they are the same in range. It just seems to me that some cars EPA number are more realistic than others and the older the easier it is to beat epa.

I think the opposite is true - the really old ratings were much higher, and harder to beat. Like the pre-'84 or '85 ratings that were 20% higher. Or look at the 1998/99/00 Metro ratings - they go down with each successive year for the same car.

As to your main question... I just don't know.

I think I understand what you're trying to say, Ziploto.

My guess would be to get the info on how the EPA is doing its new testing and perform the same tests on your own vehicle. That is about the closest I could think of leveling the playing field.

Perform your own EPA tests? Ha! Bring lot$ of money! For instance, The EPA gas mileage tests : "they" don't measure fuel consumption..."they" weigh the carbon emitted versus the carbon ingested...over time.

The new EPA ratings are going to be more realistic starting in 08.

does anyone know if the fleet mileage is staying the same? because if they are leaving the bar the same height, and making the test a bit more harsh, then they alot of car compenys are going to have to start making a better product, correct?
