when car is off mileage does not change is this normal

Last night for the first time i tried to turn my car off while driving down hill and then i noticed that my odomiter stop turning is this normal i have a 95 corolla.
I do alot of night driving and and my rear tail lights turn off aswell when the is off i can't be driving on the freeway at night with out tail lights

it is EXTREMELY abnormal for the odometer to stop turning if the car is off.

Depends. When you turn the car off and leave it in ACC the odometer stops. If you turn it off then move it one more notch forward to RUN all should be normal.

Yes, make sure to turn it back to the run position almost immediately!

My Crx used to register mileage even when turned off. The VX however must be in the run position. On a side note putting the car back to run will prevent you from trying to rollstart when it can't start.

The CRX has a mechanical odometer (stock), which is why is kept going. After that honda switched to electronic, which is what I now use. Just for general knowledge's sake.
