97 Jeep XJ - 4.0L

...I wanted to poll the forum for XJ owners. I have one...love everything about it except the gas mileage. I have pondered and read - I am getting ~ 18 MPG and am targeting 22 MPG. I will tune it up soon; after that I have been pondering a Cold Air Intake (perhaps Rusty's with a K&N for ~ $65 or so...)

...anyone out there have an opinion...or other cool ideas to eeeek a few more feet/gallon?

Get a warm air intake..... and what mods have you done to it so far?

Air up the tires to max sidewall pressure to help with rolling resistance also.

The 4.0L is torque monster but not and FE beast. Whether is an XJ or TJ, they just don't seem to able to pull anything better than 20mpg if you are lucky.

Do you have an Auto or Manual? Any Lift or Big Tires? Drive more City of Highway?

Air up tires...remove and excess weight...shift early if manual since the engine has plenty of low end torque...maybe synthetic oil would help a bit.

As I always say in situations like this, perhaps a second vehicle is not a bad idea. Let's face it. Even if you can get 22MPG, that still isn't very good. ESPECIALLY if this is what you are driving around all the time. Maybe you could find a used Civic that you could pick up for a thousand or two. Maybe even less, if you are able to fix things up. This will also give you the security of a second vehicle in case one of them breaks down or gets wrecked.

My flying monkeys tell me that the hot swap for XJ mpg these days is the 4BT diesel motor.

...P235/75/15's...the air pressure is what is on the sidewall...at least I think...
...no lift
...all stock

...what is warm air intake? No joke. I would think that the OEM system is a warm air intake...?... Would colder air yield a better MPG?
