Before installing the new
Before installing the new one I put both new and old in a small pot of water and warmed them up on the stove. For sure the 172F was wide open before the 192F even moved. Seeing is believing.

No I didnt drain the
No I didnt drain the coolant. Just pulled the radiator hose off and arranged it so the opening was sticking upward so no more would leak out. At most i lost 1 qt. I just added water.

i guess i'm an anomoly. I
i guess i'm an anomoly. I dropped in a 180 thermo some time ago shortly after i moved into a hilly area.
Actually, i was having starting problems on hot days when the engine was warmed up all the way. That went away almost completely with the lower thermo.
The most important part, no mileage change while i was watching it very closely. My best mileage run wich was just under 25mpgs in my truck was done with the 180....
Of course, i'm in a truck, a 1991, and a TBI, so maybee for all you nicely tuned guys, this post was for nothing.
