Temporay Cavlier DRL disable

I'm driving a '96 Cavalier, with DRL's that are really bugging me. I've found two methods to disable them on the internet: The first is an easy under-the-hood mod which will, unfortunately, leave my dashboard DRL indicator blinking forever. Then second, which I intend to use eventually, involves taking the dashboard apart.

As winter approached, I found myself driving to work in growing darkness. One morning, I pulled up behind a pickup truck at a stop light, with my DRL's reflecting off it's tail gate. I put the parking brake on to save the juice to the brake lights and, lo and behold, the DRL's turned off! So now I'm driving with the parking brake lever pulled to the first notch. This turns on the brake indicator on the dash, but I figure that's a fine compromise.

Before someone replies about the danger of my brakes constantly dragging, let me assure you, there is plenty of slack in the system. Springs take up the slack in the cables. Once that slack is removed, then there are the springs on the drum brakes holding them pads away from the drums. It takes four or five "clicks" on the lever before the brakes even start to engage. I'm comfortable with the temporary fix and will be happy use it until spring, when I can tear the dash apart.

Nice find. I wonder if there might be a seperate switch on the e-brake that de-activates the DRL's? If so, it could be as easy as unplugging it.

Is there not a plug to disconnect for your DRL's? My W-body had a plug inside the dash right at an access panel. 10 seconds in and out.

EchoTech: Yep, that's the in-dash mod I'll use. (step 8 - put your dash back together)

DRW: Could be. But I'm thinking there is just one switch on the p-brake, which sends a signal to the ECU, which then turns on the dash p-brake light and turns the off DRL's. BTW, putting the trannie in park also turns off the DRL's, but I don't get very good mileage in park

ok it might be like my 95 s-10's

it had a seperate fuse in the fusepannel labeled DRL, yank that out and walla no more drl's

or if there is a "black fuse" (AKA a diode) pull that out, that will also disable the drl.

OR like you said, once its a tad warmer take of fth elower kick pannel and hunt down the DRl relay or control module underthere and cut it out.

on newer trucks i know u can pop out one of the relays and bend a pin up so it doesnt make contact and no more drl's.
