Using EVO Application

<img src=http://www.channel4.com/4car/media/M/mitsubishi/evo/03-large/04-400-r-detail.jpg>

"Those little nubby bits on the roof where it meets the rear screen are an aerodynamic device intended to reduce the drag created by the air as it rushes over the car."

A few magazines covered this. Who knows if it really works...if it does, why aren't more automakers using it

because maybe it only works

because maybe it only works at high speeds??
these cars are not made for fuel economy, they are made for performance.

Some aero stuff doesn't work for us because we don't attain high speeds.

I was talking about the little nubs on the roof

Mitsubishi says that it would help to reduce drag. Just an idea, just because it is for performance doesn't mean we can't use it. (not the wing, the things on the roof ~ I dont know what to call them)

Phil Knox

Here is a little explaination from the Phil Knox from the Toyota Tundra discussion.

Phil Knox:
Your hatchback has a station wagon type wake of turbulent air, however, it is free of attached vortices. The sedans wake actually begins at the end of the roof as flow which cannot follow the steep backlight angle separates. Also, while this flow may reattach at the end of the trunklid where the main wake begins, the radical pressure gradients and violent mixing zones caused by velocity discrepancies between dide flow and rooftop flow can cause attached vortices which can trail the car by hundreds of feet, robbing horsepower from the engine.

These have been discussed

These have been discussed before, I think the general consensus was not for that much money,

They're mean looking though.

Not worth it, cool though

We discussed this exact thing here: http://www.gassavers.org/forum_topic...ts_per_page=30

and found out that the generators reduce drag by .006 and downforce onto the spoiler similarly.

The full report: http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com/cor...004/16E_03.pdf

Thanks for referencing the EVO though (it still holds a place in my heart) 8)

it might not be...

It might not be the nicest looking car around, but it has supercar-like speed on a tight racetrack.

well

Maybe that is why they put the rev limiter on the models, because people were revving it to the redline, and then dropping the clutch! Both cars are insanely fast, the WRX will treat you to a better ride, but if you want to feel 100% connected, get the EVO...

you want to put bolt ons

you want to put bolt ons then get the WRX sti. If you are going for pure power then get EVO.

STI's had problems with trannies too, I think the 04 models got it fixed.

I wouldn't get neither of those cars, STi is more reliable but I don't need a car that looks ugly like that.

I love the 3rd gen rx7. They have engine problems but if you swap in a LS1 then the problems go away.

OK already

The EVO is meant to be an agressive-looking vehicle and smokes just about anything out there.

Check out my Avatar -- does it look ugly there?

I agree -- I had tons of tranny probs, even with proper break-in (bad run of transmissions). When it ran, it works well for both race and 4-doorness.

But yes, the STI (big I this year) reigns supreme. I should've gotten one of those instead -- I might still have had it today (bad for mileage tho :P and speeding is just way too easy }

Honestly drive either of these cars and you'll be impressed.

Maximas with 3.5 swap now

Maximas with 3.5 swap now run 13 flat and soon mid 12's.

Basically a 95-99maxima with the 3.0 taken out and 3.5 put in. It will get about 20mpg around city and 30mpg on the freeway if you drive it right. Now that will smoke an evo.

rh77 have you seen the famous video of a civic hatch smoking a yellow EVO??? This just proves you don't have to buy a 30k car in order to go fast.

For roughly $10,000 I was smoking the **** out of Mustang GT's and nearly all 4 cylinders with my Civic.

If you're willing to do the work yourself, you don't have to spend that much to blow away the competition.

The funny thing about this is that there is a guy a few minutes from my house that took a 2.2 prelude engine and is making 793whp...

Good lord. But If he used a 2.4 liter he would be boosting 650whp and be about the 1/4 mile time. Having a bigger engine will have a bigger torque curve most of the time. That's why NA maximas with 3.5 engine can beat supercharged 3.0 maximas

Small block

I'm still waiting to see someone try to shoe-horn a small block v8 into a civic or something. Kinda like when they put big blocks in a Datsun way back when.

I don't see why the 3.4

I don't see why the 3.4 would make 150 less whp than the 2.2, I am also not seeing a properly boosted 3.0 lose to a 3.5, but then again, nissans _____.

My aim wasn't to go out street racing, and I'm not a mechanic. I wanted a one-off Rally car that I could have some fun with, and the EVO was the first one to fit the bill in the 'States. I had been watching them on the WRC for a few years at that point, and really wanted one. The EVO-8 isn't designed just for straight-line stuff -- if you dragged it too often, the clutch would be fried in no-time. I had a '99 Civic Si (B16A2) with no major mods that I could've easily modded to go fast in a straight line, but to have an AWD car with a warranty, recaro seats with 5-point harness points, four doors, a usable trunk, A/C, and a hand-made carbon-fiber spoiler seemed like perfect fun. Especially by putting Winter tires on in the colder months. I couldn't wait for the snow and ice. SUVs were sliding all over the place and here I was having a blast, in control. The pull from the turbo in 2nd and especially 3rd gears was truly memorable -- in any weather condition. The rear LSD locked-in when slip was detected and off you went. The steering was super-quick and handling was almost too good to keep up with. I could go on, but I won't bore you with the how much fun this car was (and I got to drive it to work every day) :-) It's out of my system now, and I'm driving a de-tuned Integra at 15 MPH under the highway speed limit. Who would've figured :?

They sell those thingies as packs of 6 for approx $20.00 around here. Cheepskate plastic though. You need to treat, prep and paint em before you can mount em...

Extremely ugly... I would prefer a DTM style spoiler with vortex generating winglets facing upwards and splitters at the rear bumper (valance style) so the air flow will be headed and guided...

I can't imagine this setup, would you be able to sketch it and share your sketch with me?
