1996 DX ..what can I do?
This is a Mazda Protege with 1.5.
I see this site is almost all Honda's, but hopefully some of those guy's can relate to Mazda setup as well.
One thing that interests me is "lean burn". I think my car is pretty much stock. "Lean burn" was a term used by Mazda to describe a variation of this engine sold in Japan. Some say the same setup was sold in US in '96.
I have a scanner that will print some information here, so what operational data would you need to see to tell me about how this engine controls itself? I think it behaves well, but I would appreciate your thoughts.

I'm thinking in Ford here, due to a lot of protege stuff being similar to escort stuff, but a scanner I borrowed was able to tell me injector duration hooked to the Escort. So, if'n you've got that, that should be an indication.

I think the same engine might be in some escorts, but the ignition is different, among other things. I think that is correct.
Scanner shows obd2 ISO mode $10- Fuel trims, but not pulse width.
This is an actron scanner.

check out the -100% fuel trim. Dont know what that means...
The 02 sensor was going way lean ( 0 volts) for several seconds at a time

You won't get fuel rate from OBDII. If you want fuel injector data, take a look at the fuel rate monitor link in my sig. It's very interesting to watch live while you're driving.

Ah right, that was an OBD-1 scanner I had, might have been in a ford specific program too, KOER regime of the EEC-IV self testing procedures now I come to think about it.

Well, to be 100% accurate...while OBDII itself won't transmit fuel rate, there could be manufacturer-specific extensions to it that will, but they'll require expensive specialized equipment to read, instead of a relatively inexpensive ScanGauge or ELM327.

Look into swapping in the JDM lean-burn motor and ECU. Maybe you can get close to Civic VX numbers.

That may not be possible or even necessary
I would like to know what some this scanner data means:

Maybe there are ways to convert the "economy" package to lean burn. |
