What mods/fixes are you planning?
Anyone care to share what are in the future plans for your vehicle(s)? Just list anything - common repairs and/or modifications.
I'm mostly posting so I can make a list for myself
- Tune up/fluids change/lube
- Brakes (all four wheels)
- Onboard diagnostic system (building it this weekend)
- Body work/rust removal
- Exhaust replacement
- Engine rebuild (maybe next year)
- Grill blocking/air deflectors
- Debating with myself about wheel skirts, but I do have some drawn up
- RWED (Rear-Wheel-Electric-Drive)...need to find an old Chevette/Acadian to experiment on
- Turbo (low boost - mostly to run a generator)
- Lightweight rims
- Smaller and/or lightweight gas tank
I'm certain that I'll think of more stuff as I go.

We've been trying to figure out the effect of free-flow exhaust vs. a more restrictive one. I think your car may be a good experiment since it has a straight pipe. If you do the exhaust on a separate tank, could you report the results on economy? I'm curious. Thanks!

No problem...that's been my plan all along actually. There may be some temperature variance involved, but I will fill up just before I do the exhaust and see what kind of difference I find after.
Sorry that my gaslog on this site is not complete at all - I've just been too lazy to repost all the data here. I have a pdf version on my car's website:
http://www3.telus.net/metro/log/jan2106.htm
We should be able to extrapolate the straight-pipe vs. exhaust figures pretty easily.
I have to save up for the exhaust since I want a brand new OEM replacement. Should be able to do it in July or August I think.

What is currently on is the original 11-year-old cat, solid pipe, and a rusted out resonator tip. Ugly as hell and buzzes like mad.
I'm going to replace the entire system with an OEM Walker replacement exhaust - cat, resonator, muffler.

But it's a Metro...how exciting can it get? I'd have to mod WAY more than the exhaust and then lose all my great mpg.
Besides, picture a stock Metro with a 4" exhaust...

I'm not talking bigger, I'm talking anything. I dunno if bigger or smaller or lots of bends or what does anything to MPG, no one really does.

Well, we know that a plugged exhaust would be bad for the car, FE, and for emissions.
A large exhaust allows free flow at high rpm, but high rpm is generally bad for FE and burning more fuel obviously bad for emissions.
A little backpressure is good for low rpm torque - good for pulling away from a dead stop.
The OEM setup is sort of the ultimate balance between FE, performance, and emissions control from what I understand.
An exhaust test for FE would be, pardon the pun, a fairly exhausting experience I think.

There have been a few serious mpg people to claim a 2 or 2.25 pipe up from a 1.23 or 1.5 to increase FE.

i'm afraid to start a list
i'm afraid to start a list of planned mods. i don't want to get carried away. but let's start with this:
- get the deep-cycle battery in the car before i damage my starting battery with the alternator-optional mod
- finish permanent grille block
- belly pan experiment/permanent belly pan
- clean up my kill-switch installation. it's duct-taped to my shifter and the 80F temps a couple of days this week had the inside of the car cooking - the adhesive got gummy and the switch nearly fell off.

SVO has already told me to "get off my old lady" and get on my 5-speed conversion. Perhaps I'll do that in the next few weeks.

The "List"
Well, to achieve 40 mpg in the Automatic:
-Grille and partial engine bay / undercarriage block (not entirely for aero, but to trap heat mostly)
-New tires when these get down to near-zero tread, or when I scare the crap out of myself on a rainy roadway (thinking Michelin Harmony)
-Perfecting the driving style and coasting
-Maybe some aero mods, but my FE losses are the most in city driving
-Wait until this car wears-out and get a much more efficient one (could be years...stay tuned)
-Advanced: A controlled split cold or hot air intake system for emergency power on-demand or autocross
-For the TL: fix the CAT, trick the ECU or sell it (sorry :-()
-Buy a "ForkenSwift" from The MetroMPG Company ;-)

Aaah! I'm jealous! Can I have one?
Seriously though, I may be contacting you and asking for some vehicle measurements and such one of these days. I have this crazy idea about transplanting the RWD from a Chevette into the Metro for low-speed EV power.
On a different note I built an OBD1 to computer interface cable on the weekend. Still have to test it to make certain I don't fry anything though.

DX to CX tranny swap. Hopefully I can get SVOboy to stop by soon and help me install it. Actually, I would be handing him wrenches and lemonade while he installs it.

After the Tour De Sol, my
After the Tour De Sol, my wife informed me that I have already spent enough time gallivanting around the country for awhile. I would have to get permission from her to drive clear across tarnation to NJ. And then, if something went wrong and I needed to wait a few days to get a critical part, well I would be in a world of hurt.
Looks like you coming here would be easier. But we will just have to see about that. It seems like not a day goes by when I try to shift from third to fifth, but I am bummed when I figure out that I am already in fifth.

I had to drive a jeep at the shop today that was stick and the dog stench was so disorienting I missed the park brake light and killed it, I was made fun of.

Manual trannyu fluid
Manual trannyu fluid shouldn't be hard. Just get a good long funnel. I did my friend's auto with you car and all I needed to complete the easiness was a big *** funnel (2 foot long or so).

I just used a regular funnel with 3/8" fuel hose attached to the end. Luckily I used 0W-20 because it took 1/2 hr to get the 2 quarts in. It might take hours for 30W.
