Could you detail how you get the mechanical part to work in case anyone else needs to do that? (Like me, for instance.) Thanks in advance.

For the honda SVOBoy had to upgrade to a completely different VSS, which required removing the VSS from the transmission and wiring up the new one. The downside of this is that his old gauge cluster would no longer work with the new VSS (the speedometer/odometer at least). He also just upgraded to a newer gauge cluster so that he wouldn't have these problems.

If you have a mechanical VSS it's likely that you also have an electric pulse that goes to your ECU. I'd track down a service manual with ECU wire pinouts to find out which wire it is.

Got a SuperMID from Yoshi last week and am tackling the install this weekend. I took a peek under the dash of my '92 Civic Si and had a couple of questions that I'm hoping other Civic/SMID users can help with.

How do I get the panel covering the ECU off?

How do I identify the injector wires from the ECU?

How do I find the VSS? It looks like all my wiring is tightly wrapped in harnesses. Which harness do I break into? How do I identify the VSS wire.

The power and ground shouldn't be a problem. Any other tips greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

You don't need to take the cover off the ecu itself, but to get to the ecu there is a cover over it. It's on the passenger side under the dash sort of up on the side by the door.

http://crxmpg.com/obd1pinouts.html

Those are ecu pinouts for your ecu so you know which wires are which.

Thanks Ben. I think I found it .

Now I just have to get the cover off and get at the connectors.

Got the cover off and unplugged the harness. When I matched it up with the pinout diagram the A1 INJ1 color was brown as in the table but the VSS pin B10 was yellow/blue on the car but orange in the table. Am I okay with that?

Thanks,
Sean

Looks like the VSS is blue and yellow. Check out this picture for help locating the right wire:

http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/pub/Libra...OBD2to1ab2.jpg

The picture is looking at the ECU female plugs, so it can also be looking at the back of the wire harness plugs.

Fantastic! I think I got it. The picture put me over the top and I double checked the counting as well. Thanks a ton Matt and Ben.

The harness with the brown INJ1 cable pulled out on the left and the yellow/blue VSS cable pulled out on the right.

The wires from the SuperMID interface box spliced into the INJ1 and VSS cables.

The ECU put back in place with the interface box velcroed onto it.

I have a mechanical VSS on my 88 CRX.

Will I be able to install it and have it work properly or will I have to upgrade to an electronic VSS and swap out my gauge cluster as well?

Dang!

What car would I be able to get an electronic VSS out of as well as the gauge cluster?

92-00 civic d series for the vss

My vss is out of the cx transmission I sold burnett and the cluster is from a 97 integra,

I have a spare electronic VSS in my office somewhere if you want it.

I'll definitely take that! Let me know what shipping and such will be.

Just FYI... I never did test this, but it might be worth testing before you go changing VSS and clusters.

on the back of the cluster there is a terminal that gives an electronic signal relative to your speed. It gives it in pulses, I believe 4 per revolution.

Many people have said it wouldn't work for a SuperMID, but none of them have tested it. It was my original intention to test it before I bought the Honda Fit.

I would test this before going crazy with everything else.

That being said, I don't think that the SuperMID can work on a DPFI engine/ECU. It assumes four injectors. DPFI has one primary injector and one secondary injector.

Would I be able to use my current gauge cluster cover if I found one of these or would I have to get that separate as well?

if you got a new VSS you'd need a new cluster as well.

Unless you don't care to monitor your speed.

- Electronic VSS
- Cluster
- cluster shroud (since I have a squarish 88 rex)

In that case, you have a few options:

1: Read post #19 above
2: Yoshi has external VSS units that attach to your axle for sale as well. Might be much less hassle than swapping everything out.

I know on my HF tranny I couldn't get the cable VSS out for the life of me.

Sorry Matt, totally skipped over post #19.

I would much rather prefer to try this out before going ahead with a cluster swap and all of that nonsense.

My MPFI swap parts are almost all together, just have to find some injector plugs and other small pieces.

It's almost torture having the SuperMID in my posession and not being able to install it, it will just make the pay-off that much sweeter I guess.

Pardon my ignorance but how would I go about finding this terminal?

Ok..sorry to dig up an old thread..but where did you buy all this from premade?

I found where there was the DIY to make the whole unit yourself...but I'm not that technically inclined to do that big of a schematic or circuit.

What work would be required to make it similar to a ScanGauge?

What was the cost? ..is it competitive vs a ScanGauge for MPG purposes or would it be easier/cheaper just to get the SGII?
