What kind of car do you have? Does your car have an electric fan or a belt driven fan? If it has an electric fan, then you may be able to make a switch that turns the fan on when *you* want it to come on. In that way, you will be able to reduce your coolant temperature as you see fit.
Here in LA, we're getting record temps, so my partial grill block is making my coolant go up faster than I like.
