Tornado Logic

Years ago, maybe, Popular Mechanics tested all the 'gas savers' on two pickups on dynometers.
They bought the magnets, electrical 'aura' things and........the Tornado.

What happens to the airflow when it hits the butterfly in the throttle body?
Hint; lots of turbulence, I suspect.

Thinking about it; what exactly is 'porting' and 'polishing' and what is it supposed to do?
Hint; cleans up and smooths out airflow.

So, if you introduce something into the airflow before the throttle body, that makes the air behave like your bathtub drain....isn't that effect affected by the butterly, and the whole effect removed?

Apparently.
Popular Mechanics said none of those things worked and all of them caused a drop in power and mileage.

Then I wondered which race cars used the Tornado.
Or magnets.

Years ago I bought a Tornado for Rusty. The only thing that it did really well was take $70 out of my wallet.

I wish I could find the EPA page summarizing their own tests, but all I could find was their details page with links to detailed report on each of 93 devices they've tested:

Only works on my Ford. Rusty has problems, needs tuneing.
I've put smaller ones than recomended on my ford 4.6 and on a Dakota 3.9. No loss of power. My ex-manager got 14 mpg all the time no matter what type of driving. Now he gets 15.5 ish.

Rusty has tuning problems now, but 10 years ago when I bought the Tornado he didn't have those issues.

Adding things to the airstream reduces efficiency - to create power, or gain mileage, you need to optimize efficiency. Simple as that.

I can simply record the MAF data on the OBDII scanner at work to prove more air is entering my 4.6 Ford engine. But of coarse that dosn't prove it's more thermaly eff.
